What is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?

Minimally invasive removal of gallbladder through 4 small incisions using video camera and instruments. Gold standard for symptomatic gallstone disease. Advantages: less pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, smaller scars.

Pre-operative Preparation

NPO 6-8 hours. Blood tests, imaging (ultrasound/CT). Anesthesia consultation. Risk stratification for conversion to open surgery.

Procedure Overview

Four 5-10mm incisions (umbilicus, epigastrium, right midclavicular, right anterior axillary). CO2 insufflation creates working space. Video camera visualizes gallbladder. Careful dissection and clipping of cystic artery and duct. Specimen extraction through umbilical incision.

Recovery

  • Hospital Stay: Same-day or 1 day
  • Return to Light Work: 1-2 weeks
  • Full Recovery: 3-4 weeks
  • Return to Exercise: 4-6 weeks

Success Rate

Success rate >95%. Complications <1% in experienced hands. Conversion to open surgery 2-5% (injury, inflammation, anatomy). Most patients experience complete symptom resolution.
