The Whipple Procedure at Charak Hospital

The Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure) is the most complex abdominal operation — removing the head of the pancreas, duodenum, gallbladder and part of the bile duct, then reconstructing three digestive connections. Dr. Ashok Kumar's super-speciality training and 25+ years of GI surgical experience makes him uniquely qualified to perform this procedure safely. Hospital stay is typically 7–10 days; full recovery 6–8 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple) is a 4–6 hour operation performed under general anaesthesia. Dr. Ashok Kumar removes the head of the pancreas, duodenum, lower bile duct, gallbladder and sometimes part of the stomach, then reconnects the remaining pancreas, bile duct and stomach to the small intestine. Hospital stay is 7–10 days.
Early-stage gallbladder cancer (T1a) found incidentally after laparoscopic cholecystectomy may be cured by cholecystectomy alone. T1b and T2 tumours require extended cholecystectomy with liver resection (segments IVb and V) and regional lymph node dissection. T3/T4 tumours require more extensive surgery with neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy.
Chronic pancreatitis causing intractable pain, ductal obstruction or pancreatic insufficiency may need surgical drainage (Puestow/Frey procedure) or resection. Surgery relieves pain in 70–80% of patients. Medical management includes enzyme replacement, pain management and lifestyle changes.
