Lucknow's Most Experienced HPB & GI Surgical Team

The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology & Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery at Charak Hospital is the premier destination for complex GI and HPB surgical care in Lucknow. Our department is led by Dr. (Prof.) Ashok Kumar — a surgical gastroenterologist of national renown who holds an MCh from SGPGI Lucknow, triple FRCS (England, Edinburgh & Ireland), FACS, FASCRS and FAMS. As a Former Professor at SGPGI — one of India's premier postgraduate medical institutes — Dr. Kumar has trained generations of GI surgeons and contributed extensively to surgical research.

The department handles the full spectrum of GI surgical disease: from intricate Whipple operations and liver resections to laparoscopic cholecystectomies and day-care proctology procedures like MIPH and laser fistula treatment. We serve patients from Chowk, Balaganj, Dubagga, Rajaji Puram, Alambagh, Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj and all parts of Lucknow — as well as referrals from across Uttar Pradesh. Our laparoscopic-first philosophy means smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery for the vast majority of our patients.

Why Patients Choose Charak Hospital for GI Surgery

Unmatched HPB Expertise

Dr. (Prof.) Ashok Kumar holds 13 international fellowships including triple FRCS, FACS & FASCRS — credentials earned by fewer than a handful of surgeons in Uttar Pradesh. His MCh in Surgical Gastroenterology is from SGPGI, India's premier GI surgical training centre.

Laparoscopic-First Approach

The vast majority of procedures — cholecystectomy, hernia, colorectal resections, appendicectomy — are performed laparoscopically. Smaller cuts, less blood loss, less pain, and a faster return to normal life for patients from Dubagga, Alambagh, and across Lucknow.

Dedicated GI ICU & HDU

Complex HPB and colorectal surgeries are backed by a well-equipped surgical ICU, high-dependency unit (HDU), and round-the-clock anaesthesia cover — essential for post-Whipple and major hepatectomy recovery.

Multidisciplinary Tumour Board

All GI and HPB cancers are reviewed by our Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) — medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology — ensuring every patient receives the most evidence-based treatment plan available.

Frequently Asked Questions

HPB stands for Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary surgery — a super-speciality covering complex operations on the liver, pancreas, bile ducts, and gallbladder. Patients with pancreatic cancer (requiring the Whipple operation), liver tumours (requiring hepatectomy), gallbladder cancer, bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma), chronic pancreatitis, or large CBD stones are referred to an HPB surgeon. At Charak Hospital, HPB surgery is led by Dr. (Prof.) Ashok Kumar — MCh, FRCS, FACS — with over 25 years of dedicated experience.
The Whipple procedure is one of the most complex abdominal operations — but in experienced hands, it is both safe and life-extending for pancreatic head cancer and periampullary cancers. At Charak Hospital, it is performed by Dr. (Prof.) Ashok Kumar, one of the most experienced HPB surgeons in Uttar Pradesh. Post-operative care includes a dedicated surgical ICU, dietetics team, and oncology MDT. Complication rates in high-volume, experienced centres are significantly lower than the national average.
Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery uses 3–5 small incisions of 5–10 mm, a high-definition camera, and long instruments to perform the same operation as open surgery — with far less pain, smaller scars, lower risk of wound infection, shorter hospital stay (often 1–2 days vs. 5–7 days), and faster return to work and daily activities. At Charak Hospital, we adopt a laparoscopic-first approach for cholecystectomy, hernia repair, appendicectomy, colorectal resections, and many other procedures.
Grade I and II haemorrhoids can be managed non-surgically with rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or dietary changes. Grade III and IV haemorrhoids that bleed significantly or prolapse are best treated surgically. We offer: MIPH (Minimally Invasive Procedure for Haemorrhoids) — a stapler technique that is essentially painless and day-care; Laser haemorrhoidoplasty — precise energy-based ablation with minimal post-op pain; and conventional haemorrhoidectomy for very large piles. Most patients go home the same day or next morning.
Most patients with symptomatic gallstones — causing repeated right upper abdomen pain (biliary colic), nausea, vomiting, or complications like acute cholecystitis, obstructive jaundice, or acute pancreatitis — are advised laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder). It is a 30–45 minute procedure under general anaesthesia. You can live perfectly normally without a gallbladder. Asymptomatic gallstones are monitored unless they are large (>3 cm) or there is a thickened gallbladder wall.
Yes. Laparoscopic colectomy, anterior resection, and abdominoperineal resection (APR) for colon and rectal cancers are performed at Charak Hospital. Multiple large clinical trials (CLASICC, COLOR II) confirm that laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery achieves equivalent oncological outcomes to open surgery — with the added benefits of less pain, earlier recovery, and faster return to adjuvant chemotherapy. Both Dr. Ashok Kumar and Dr. Manish Sharma are experienced in minimally invasive colorectal cancer surgery.
We serve patients from all parts of Lucknow including Chowk, Balaganj, Dubagga, Rajaji Puram, Alambagh, Aliganj, Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj, Aminabad, Indira Nagar, Chinhat, Vikas Nagar, and Faizabad Road. Charak Hospital on Hardoi Road, Dubagga is easily accessible from most parts of the city. We also receive referrals from Unnao, Hardoi, Sitapur, Barabanki, Raebareli, and Kanpur.
Charak Hospital accepts Ayushman Bharat (PMJAY), CGHS, ECHS, UPSRTC, and all major third-party administrators (TPAs) including Star Health, Mediassist, Medi-Claim, Heritage Health, Vipul Medcorp, and more. Our insurance desk can assist with pre-authorization and cashless claim processing. Please call 05226664444 for insurance queries.
