Colon Cancer β€” Overview

Colon cancer arises from the inner lining of the large intestine (colon). It usually develops from benign polyps that slowly become malignant over 5–10 years. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in India and rising in incidence. Most cases are curable when detected early.

Warning Signs

  • Change in bowel habits lasting more than 4 weeks
  • Blood in stool (bright red or dark)
  • Unexplained weight loss and fatigue
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Iron deficiency anaemia without obvious cause
  • Feeling that the bowel doesn't empty completely

Surgical Treatment

  • Right Hemicolectomy β€” for cancers of the caecum, ascending colon and hepatic flexure
  • Left Hemicolectomy β€” for cancers of the descending colon and splenic flexure
  • Sigmoid Colectomy β€” for sigmoid colon cancers
  • Total/Subtotal Colectomy β€” for multiple synchronous cancers or hereditary polyposis syndromes (FAP, Lynch syndrome)
  • Laparoscopic Colectomy β€” keyhole surgery; equivalent oncological outcomes with faster recovery

All colon cancer surgeries by Dr. Ashok Kumar follow the principle of Complete Mesocolic Excision (CME) with Central Vascular Ligation (CVL) β€” the oncological gold standard that maximises lymph node harvest and reduces local recurrence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stage I: 90%+ five-year survival. Stage II: 70–85%. Stage III (lymph node positive): 40–80% depending on nodes involved; adjuvant chemotherapy improves outcomes. Stage IV (metastatic): 10–15% with modern treatment including targeted therapy and surgical resection of liver metastases in selected cases.
Stage III colon cancer (positive lymph nodes) routinely requires 6 months of adjuvant chemotherapy (FOLFOX or CAPOX) after surgery to reduce recurrence risk. Stage II high-risk cases may also benefit. Stage I cancer is cured by surgery alone in most cases.
Laparoscopic colectomy: hospital stay 3–4 days, return to desk work in 2–3 weeks, full recovery in 4–5 weeks. Open colectomy: hospital stay 5–7 days, recovery 6–8 weeks. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols at Charak Hospital aim to minimise stay and speed recovery.
