Understanding Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is cancer arising from the inner lining of the colon or rectum. It is the third most common cancer globally and rising in incidence in India. Most colorectal cancers develop from polyps — benign growths that can turn malignant over 5–10 years. Regular colonoscopy screening can detect polyps before they become cancerous.

Warning Signs

  • Change in bowel habits (diarrhoea, constipation or both)
  • Blood in stool (bright red or dark)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent abdominal pain or cramping
  • Feeling that the bowel doesn't empty completely
  • Iron deficiency anaemia without obvious cause

  • Neoadjuvant therapy: Chemoradiation before rectal cancer surgery to shrink tumour and increase sphincter preservation rates

  • Surveillance: CEA monitoring, colonoscopy and CT scans post-operatively

Frequently Asked Questions

Screening colonoscopy is recommended from age 45 for average-risk individuals, or earlier if there is a family history of colorectal cancer, familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or Lynch syndrome. Colonoscopy every 10 years if normal; more frequently if polyps are found.
Stage III colorectal cancer (spread to regional lymph nodes but not distant organs) has a 5-year survival rate of 40–80% depending on the number of lymph nodes involved. Surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy (FOLFOX or CAPOX) for 6 months significantly improves outcomes.
Open colectomy: 5–7 days. Laparoscopic colectomy: 3–5 days. Low anterior resection: 5–7 days (with temporary ileostomy). Recovery to normal activity: 4–8 weeks depending on the procedure. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols at Charak Hospital aim to minimise hospital stay and complications.
