About antenatal care

Why antenatal check-ups matter

Antenatal care checks your health and your baby’s growth throughout pregnancy. It helps detect conditions such as anaemia, high blood pressure, diabetes in pregnancy and infections early, when they are easier to treat.

  • Book your first visit as soon as the pregnancy test is positive
  • Start folic acid before pregnancy or as early as possible
  • Most women need at least 8 contacts with their care team during pregnancy
  • Some pregnancies need extra care (high-risk pregnancy)
  • Plan where and how you will deliver well in advance

Regular check-ups

Weight, BP, urine and baby’s growth.

Timely scans

Dating, anomaly and growth scans.

Blood tests

Anaemia, sugar, thyroid and infections.

Supplements
