Blood in Urine — Never Ignore It

The most common and earliest sign of bladder cancer is painless blood in urine (haematuria). It may appear once and disappear — but even a single episode requires urgent cystoscopy evaluation. Early-stage bladder cancer has a 5-year survival rate above 90% with timely TURBT.

⚠️ Warning signs: Blood in urine (red, pink or smoky), frequent urination, pain urinating. Consult Dr. Dokania immediately.

Bladder Cancer Treatment Options

  • TURBT (Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumour) — endoscopic removal for non-muscle-invasive cancer. Day-care/overnight. No incision.
  • BCG / Mitomycin Intravesical Therapy — instilled into the bladder after TURBT to prevent recurrence. 6-week induction + maintenance.
  • Radical Cystectomy — complete bladder removal with ileal conduit or neobladder for muscle-invasive cancer. Laparoscopic or open.
  • Surveillance Cystoscopy — 3–6 monthly to detect recurrence early.

Frequently Asked Questions

TURBT (Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumour) is performed through the urethra using a cystoscope — no skin incision. It is done under spinal or general anaesthesia so there is no pain during surgery. Post-operatively, mild bladder irritation and pinkish urine are common for 1–3 days. Most patients are discharged within 24 hours.
BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) is an immunotherapy instilled directly into the bladder through a catheter, typically starting 2–4 weeks after TURBT. The standard regimen is 6 weekly instillations (induction) followed by 3 monthly maintenance instillations for 1–3 years. BCG significantly reduces bladder cancer recurrence rates.
TURBT is used for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (75% of cases) — the tumour is removed endoscopically, no bladder removal needed. Radical cystectomy (bladder removal) is required for muscle-invasive cancer (T2 and above). Dr. Dokania will stage the cancer with cystoscopy, biopsy and MRI/CT before recommending treatment.
