Slipped Disc Treatment — Back Pain, Sciatica & Spine Care | Charak Hospital

Slipped Disc & Sciatica Relief in Lucknow — From Physiotherapy to Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Experienced spine surgeons and physiotherapists. Personalised treatment plan — 80% of patients recover without surgery. When surgery is needed, we use the least invasive approach.

A slipped (herniated / prolapsed) disc is one of the most common causes of back pain and sciatica in adults aged 30–60. The disc presses on a nearby nerve root, causing pain, numbness, or weakness that can radiate from the back down to the leg (or from the neck to the arm). At Charak Hospital, our team of spine surgeons and neurologists offer a full spectrum of care — from targeted physiotherapy and injections to cutting-edge minimally invasive surgery.

Types of Disc Herniation

Lumbar Disc Herniation (Lower Back)

Most common. Typically at L4-L5 or L5-S1. Causes lower back pain and sciatica — shooting pain down the buttock, thigh, calf, and foot.

Cervical Disc Herniation (Neck)

At C5-C6 or C6-C7. Causes neck pain, shoulder pain, and arm/hand numbness. May cause weakness of grip. Rare but serious: cord compression causing walking difficulty.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical examination — neurological assessment, straight leg raise test
  • MRI spine (gold standard — shows disc, nerve, cord clearly)
  • X-ray spine — for alignment and disc space assessment
  • Nerve conduction studies (NCS / EMG) when nerve damage suspected

Treatment Options

Conservative (Non-Surgical)

  • Physiotherapy: core strengthening, stretching, traction, TENS
  • Medications: NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, neuropathic pain drugs
  • Epidural nerve block injections: targeted steroid injections for rapid pain relief

Surgical (When Conservative Fails)

  • Microdiscectomy / Endoscopic discectomy — keyhole surgery, removes herniated fragment
  • TLIF / PLIF spinal fusion — for instability or recurrent disc herniation
  • Cervical disc replacement / ACDF — for cervical disc herniation with cord compression

Red Flag Symptoms — Come Immediately

  • Sudden weakness in leg or foot drop
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Saddle anaesthesia (numbness in groin/inner thighs)
  • Rapidly worsening neurological symptoms
