What is Cystoscopy?

Cystoscopy is a diagnostic (and sometimes therapeutic) procedure where a thin, flexible or rigid camera (cystoscope) is passed through the urethra into the bladder, allowing direct visualisation of the bladder lining, ureteral openings, prostate (in men) and urethra. It is the gold standard for evaluating haematuria (blood in urine) and bladder pathology.

Indications for Cystoscopy

Blood in urine (haematuria)Recurrent UTI in men Abnormal urine cytologyBladder tumour surveillance Lower urinary tract symptomsUrethral stricture evaluation Bladder stone assessmentStent check / removal

Ureteroscopy

Ureteroscopy uses a thin, flexible scope advanced through the urethra and bladder into the ureter and kidney. It is used for: ureteric stone treatment (URSL), evaluation of upper tract filling defects (tumour vs stone), and biopsy of suspicious upper tract lesions. Flexible ureteroscopy enables RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) for kidney stone fragmentation.

Procedure Details

  • Diagnostic flexible cystoscopy: day-care, 10–15 minutes, under local anaesthetic jelly
  • Rigid cystoscopy/TURBT: spinal or general anaesthesia
  • Ureteroscopy/URSL: general or spinal anaesthesia, day-care to overnight
  • Mild burning on urination for 1–2 days post-procedure is normal

Frequently Asked Questions

Flexible cystoscopy (diagnostic) causes mild discomfort — similar to a urinary catheter insertion — using local anaesthetic gel. Most patients tolerate it well in a clinic setting without sedation. Rigid cystoscopy for therapeutic procedures (TURBT, stone removal) is performed under spinal or general anaesthesia.
Cystoscopy detects: bladder tumours (papillary growths, flat lesions), bladder stones, diverticula, bladder neck obstruction, trabeculation from chronic outflow obstruction, ureteral opening abnormalities, and urethral pathology (strictures, valves). Biopsy of suspicious lesions can be taken during the same procedure.
The surgeon can report normal or abnormal findings immediately during the procedure. If a biopsy is taken (during TURBT or suspicious lesion), histopathology results are available within 5–7 working days. These results determine whether further treatment (BCG therapy, radical cystectomy) is required.
