Two main dialysis modalities offer different advantages and flexibility.
Blood is filtered using an external machine (dialyzer). A vascular access (fistula, graft, or catheter) connects you to the machine. Typical schedule: 3 sessions per week, 4 hours each. Performed in dialysis centers with medical supervision. Most common modality worldwide.
Uses the abdominal lining (peritoneum) as the filter. Sterile dialysate solution is infused into the abdomen, dwells for 4-6 hours, then drained. Performed 4-5 times daily or overnight via automated machine. Greater lifestyle flexibility and independence.
A well-functioning vascular access is the lifeline of hemodialysis success.
Surgical connection of an artery directly to a vein in the arm. Creates a vessel with higher blood flow suitable for dialysis. Requires 4-6 weeks maturation before use. Most durable (15+ years), lowest infection/complication rates.
Synthetic tubing connects artery to vein when AVF is not possible. Can be used within 2-3 weeks. Higher rates of clotting and infection than AVF; lifespan typically 3-5 years.
Temporary access via catheter placed in a large neck or chest vein. Used when urgent dialysis is needed or AVF/AVG not available. Higher infection risk; intended for short-term use only.
Understanding the hemodialysis procedure helps ease anxiety and improve compliance.
Arrive 10-15 minutes early. Weight and blood pressure are checked. The vascular access site is cleansed and disinfected. Needles are placed into your fistula or graft to connect you to the dialyzer.
Blood flows from your access through the dialyzer at 300-500 mL/min. Dialysate solution (electrolyte balanced fluid) flows on the opposite side of the semi-permeable membrane. Waste, excess water, and electrolytes diffuse across the membrane. You'll rest in a comfortable reclining chair, watch TV, read, or work. Most patients tolerate dialysis well.
Needles are removed and pressure applied to the access site. Weight is rechecked. You'll be given discharge instructions about diet, fluid intake, and activity restrictions. Most dialysis patients return home and resume daily activities the same day.

What you need to know before starting dialysis treatment.
Strict dietary adherence is critical for dialysis success.
Limit to <2000 mg/day. High sodium increases thirst, blood pressure, and interdialytic weight gain. Avoid processed foods, fast food, salty snacks.
Limit to <2000 mg/day. Dialysis cannot remove potassium efficiently. High potassium causes dangerous heart rhythm abnormalities. Avoid bananas, oranges, tomatoes, potatoes, nuts.
Limit to <1000 mg/day. Excess phosphorus causes bone disease. Limit dairy, nuts, chocolate. Phosphate binders taken with meals help.
Consume high-quality protein (1.2 g/kg/day) to prevent muscle wasting. Egg whites, fish, lean meat, tofu are good sources.
