FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Head, Neck & Oral Cancer Surgery at Charak Hospital, Lucknow.

Warning signs include a non-healing mouth ulcer lasting more than 3 weeks, white or red patches in the mouth (leukoplakia/erythroplakia), lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing or speaking, voice change, and unexplained tooth loosening. Tobacco and alcohol use significantly increase risk.
Early-stage (I and II) throat cancers may be treated with surgery or radiation alone. Advanced cancers typically require a combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. The treatment plan is determined by a multidisciplinary tumour board.
For partial laryngectomies (hemilaryngectomy, supraglottic laryngectomy), the voice is often preserved. After total laryngectomy, patients lose their natural voice but can regain speech through tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (TEP), oesophageal speech, or an electrolarynx.
Most thyroid nodules (over 95%) are benign. Thyroid cancer is confirmed by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) or surgical biopsy. Differentiated thyroid cancers (papillary and follicular) have excellent prognosis with surgery and radioiodine therapy.
Most patients are discharged within 3–5 days after neck dissection. Drain removal is done at 5–7 days. Full recovery varies from 2–6 weeks. Shoulder physiotherapy may be needed if the accessory nerve is affected.
