What is an ACL Injury?

The ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) prevents the tibia from sliding forward on the femur. ACL tears are the most common serious sports injury — occurring in football, cricket, basketball, kabaddi and badminton from sudden twisting or landing movements.

⚠️ Classic sign: Audible 'POP' in the knee → immediate swelling → knee giving way → cannot continue sport.

ACL Injury Grades

Frequently Asked Questions

Classic signs: 'pop' sound, immediate swelling within 2 hours, knee giving way, inability to continue sport. Confirmed by Lachman test and MRI knee (95%+ accuracy).
Complete ACL tears rarely heal spontaneously. Active patients and athletes require reconstruction to prevent recurrent instability, meniscus tears and early arthritis.
6–9 months after reconstruction — after completing all rehab phases and passing strength tests (>90% symmetry vs opposite leg). Returning too early significantly increases re-rupture risk.
Overall re-rupture rate is 5–10%. Highest in young athletes returning to pivoting sports early. Risk is reduced by completing full rehabilitation and neuromuscular training.
