When is Hip Replacement Needed?

Recovery After Total Hip Replacement

Day 1
Stand & Walk

Stand and walk with walker on Day 1. Start gentle hip exercises. Blood thinner injection.

Week 2–4
Discharge + Home Physio

Walker at home. Follow hip precautions. Avoid extreme movements.

Week 6
Walk Without Support

Progress walker → stick → unaided. Outpatient physiotherapy continues.

After THR: do NOT bend hip beyond 90° (avoid bending forward to pick things from floor), do NOT cross legs, do NOT rotate leg inward. Use raised toilet seat and long-handled shoe horn. Precautions typically for 6–12 weeks.
AVN occurs when blood supply to the femoral head is interrupted, causing bone to die and collapse. Common causes in India: steroid use (most common), alcohol, trauma. Early AVN may be treated with core decompression. Advanced AVN requires total hip replacement.
Both are highly successful. Hip replacement has slightly higher patient satisfaction (90–95%). Recovery from hip replacement is broadly similar to knee replacement, with full benefit typically achieved by 3–4 months (slightly faster than knee).
