Frequently Asked Questions

BMG urethroplasty is the gold standard surgery for long or recurrent urethral strictures. A thin graft of mucosa from the inner cheek is harvested (the donor site heals in 5 days) and used to reconstruct the narrowed urethra. The graft is ideal because it is hairless, moist and resilient. Long-term success: 85–95% at 5 years. Hospital stay: 3–5 days; catheter for 3–4 weeks.
Diagnosis is confirmed by: urine flow rate measurement (shows reduced peak flow), retrograde urethrogram (RGU) — X-ray with contrast showing stricture location and length, and urethroscopy — direct visualisation. Ultrasound elastography can also assess stricture length. These investigations guide the choice between OIU and urethroplasty.
No — urethral dilation stretches the scar but does not remove it. Strictures recur in 50–80% of patients after dilation or internal urethrotomy within 1–2 years, and often become more severe. For definitive long-term cure, urethroplasty is the recommended treatment, especially for strictures >1 cm or those that have recurred after previous endoscopic treatment.
